At 18 I left my home in the UK to explore Australia, having bought a van and taking to the ocean road I would spend hours drawing inspiration from my surroundings waiting for the surf to greet me with a wave and invite me and my board in. The time I spent watching the sun rise and fall provided the perfect setting to draft my first tattoo, an abstract piece inspired by the sun on the ocean, which still sits on my right calf. This was to be the beginning of my personal journey in the world of tattooing and even though I explored various other styles and genres I found myself coming back full circle and realising that my love lies in abstract blackwork. Seeing the strength of a tattoo hang off just a few perfectly placed instinctive lines and fitting it’s wearer like a tailored item of clothing. Focusing with only black I create a design that when tattooed becomes part of the body and appears integrated with the person, a silhouette balancing on the skin working in harmony with their geometry displaying a mature contemporary look.
Every tattoo I do should enhance a persons natural form and by taking the time to handcraft their individual design, convey and amplify an inner strength of spirit, allowing them to feel empowered and protected as though wearing a layer of armour. A modern day warrior ready for battle.
Receiving a tattoo is a right of passage, it is a journey we embark on and when we emerge at the other end, lessons will have been learned and a life experience gained. Blackwork is a tattoo choice, it’s a lifestyle and it’s a philosophy, believing that less really is more and understanding that we should not be afraid to stand out in world full of people trying to fit in.
