Jo Harrison

Female tattoo artist specialising in scar cover-up tattoos, creating freehand designs inspired by nature and traditional Japanese tattooing. Based in Shrewsbury, UK.

For as long as Jo can remember she loved to draw,  during the 70’s she was attracted to the colourful punk culture which she embraced with its diverse array of ideologies,
fashion, and other forms of expression, along with the promotion of individual freedom. It was from here that her passion for tattooing was born.
In the mid 90’s whilst she was working towards a bachelor of arts honours degree at the university of Derby she decided to invest her student loan in tattoo equipment.
It was then out of her dorms that Jo’s early tattoo career began,  her student friends were the first to receive a tattoo from this award winning artist, at the same time Jo was able to
produce a catalogue of custom designs in an era of flash.
So prolific was her artistry and demand for work that just three years later she had built up enough momentum to open Modern Body Art, becoming an early adopter and pioneer
of a welcoming, female friendly custom tattoo studio. Jo is now credited for bringing some of the top female tattooist’s in the UK through the studio, generously sharing her skill,
talent and experience of the industry. Therefore, after 8 years of growing the business she decided to hit the road and embarked on her ‘Sweet Sting’ world tour. She travelled across continents,
studying cultures, experiencing life-changing events making memories as well as creating tattoos.
Jo is now settled in the medieval market town of Shrewsbury bordering the Welsh countryside; clients travel from all over the world to her private creative space to experience the unique talents and
spend time with one of the industry’s most dynamic, creative and nicest people.

BBC morning live Mastectomy scar cover-up tattoo.

We are excited to announce the BBC ‘morning live’ scar cover-up tattoo interview with Mei Ling and tattoo artist Jo Harrison, following Mei Ling’s double mastectomy tattoo journey.

Mei Ling, a GP and mom of two knew exactly what the lump was as soon as her hand brushed over it. So many things went through her mind, how would she cope with the treatment bringing up two children on her own and would she even be around for them when they grow up.

Tattooing can play a huge part in a clients recovery journey. Mei Ling went on Jos’ waiting list for a scar cover-up tattoo before she even had her surgery! However, as her story unfolded she decided to chose a tattoo to adorn the area rather than covering the scars. A celebration of how strong her and her children are and the journey they have been through together! What better symbology than the phoenix!

There are many options available for clients who have had a mastectomy and wish to decorate the area with a tattoo. From nipple reconstruction, tattoos over implants or beautiful designs where the breast or breasts have been completely removed.
